Stuff I Collect: OLD FOOD! (1966-1976)
OK, I have the collecting-obsession gene.
I will be the first to admit it. I began collecting vintage toys in the early 1980's and later became interested in paper product packaging ephemera (old cereal boxes, candy wrappers, fast food packages). Most collectors begin their infatuation with the (or their) past after the "college years" are over. By this point, you are a full fledged adult and there is no place to go but to look back! This is basic human nature, although primarily it's a male-dominated fixation. I'm not a doctor or a geneticist (or even Dr. Phil , Dr. Ruth or Dr. Joyce Brothers) but it is pretty conclusive that (MOST but not all) females do not have the nostalgia-recessive-persistant gene. Although they are probably sentimental about their first kiss or first grade school crush, they probably don't care about their first 45 RPM record they bought (and have to have it back again and play it on a vintage turntable!) ---they just move on.
